When serum is filtered to 0.1 micron, it will be free of bacteria. Virusses on the otherhand, are small enough to pass through this size filter. To inactivate viruses that might still be in the serum, it is exposed to a Cobalt-60 source at a 25-35 kGy dose which inactive viruses and other microbial agents, such as mycoplasmas. Gamma irradiation does not compromise the physiochemical properties or the cell culture performance of serum.
